![]() Changes in motor output, however, are a combination of changes in the excitatory and inhibitory neural pathways. In the CNS, the primary regions involved in motor control are the primary motor cortex and corticospinal tract, which activate the motor neurone pool and control motor function. This may contribute to persistence of tendon pain through the continuation of aberrant motor patterns. Exercises that are painful to complete may change motor control and cause cortical reorganisation, as pain itself is known to alter cortical representation. The effect of exercise on the motor cortex may be modulated in the presence of pain. The pain inhibition following a local isometric contraction, demonstrated in previous studies of normal participants, is widespread 12 this indicates central nervous system (CNS) involvement and warrants investigation. Isometric muscle contractions have been shown to reduce pressure pain thresholds in normal participants, 11, 12 but have not been investigated in tendon pain. Isotonic exercise (heavy, slow, concentric and eccentric resistance training) has been shown to be as effective as eccentric only exercise in patellar tendinopathy (PT) for tendon pain and activity participation 1, 10 however, the immediate effect of isotonic exercise on pain has not been studied. Therefore, alternative muscle contraction types, other than eccentric exercises, warrant investigation. Third, exercises that reduce pain are likely to have greater adherence. Second, exercise is non-invasive and without potential pharmacological side effects or sequelae of long-term use that are associated with some interventions. First, athletes may be able to manage their pain with exercises either immediately prior to or following activity. 8 Athletes are reluctant to cease sporting activity to complete eccentric exercise programmes 9 and they may be more compliant with exercise strategies that reduce pain to enable ongoing sports participation.Įxercise-induced pain relief would have several clinical benefits. 6 Where eccentric exercise has been completed in the competitive season, there has been poor adherence due to increased pain, and either no benefit 7 or worse outcomes. ![]() 5 Tendinopathy is especially problematic in the competitive season, when there are constant time and performance pressures. Eccentric exercise, which is the most commonly prescribed exercise for the treatment of tendinopathy, 1–4 is often painful to complete. Tendinopathy (tendon pain and dysfunction) in athletes is difficult to manage. Box 527, Frankston, Melbourne, VIC 3199, Australia

The World Series Cricket revolution changed cricket forever.Īfter teaming up with Jack Nicklaus to make a smash hit of the Australian Open Golf on television, Packer turned his attention to cricket. The lights were switched off and the sun took over yet again. Their pessimistic assessment read: “What is to prevent non-stop Test matches where the last wicket falls as the milkman arrives? At least there will be no appealing against the light.” They lost.Įven though it had provided lots of entertainment, the Timeswas far from convinced. The following day the county team was back to play their more serious game against the strong Surrey side. Since television time had been booked, the game was carried on till 10:30 PM even after the match had been decided. Young, the beneficiary, walked in at 187 for nine wearing a miner’s lamp, and knocked off the winning runs. Middlesex, in response, got there with some strife and, in the end, with style. The game was watched by 7000 spectators and telecast live on BBC. The match had to be held up time and again as the balls lost paint after being knocked around. The balls and stumps were white, but only due to elaborately applied paint. The 13-a-side game was played on a black matting wicket laid on the centre circle. The Bedser twins - Alec and Eric - performed the role of the umpires. The Arsenal side emerged as usual from their tunnel, kicking footballs with zest. Middlesex, playing Surrey in a Championship game at The Oval, arrived weary and just about in time for the 7:30 PM start. This one was the benefit game of the Middlesex and England left-arm spinner Jack Young. However, on August 11, 1952, the world witnessed the first cricket match under lights. Both these matches were normal day games. Denis Compton’s benefit was played in 1949, and Leslie’s in 1955. The Compton brothers enjoyed a benefit cricket match apiece, both played between Middlesex and Arsenal at Highbury. Hence the football club was quite used to hosting friendly cricket encounters. His brother Leslie Compton represented Arsenal. Denis Compton had been a part of the FA Cup winning Arsenal side in 1950, and switched to don the Middlesex whites in the summer. The following August the Compton connection was at play. The first league match under lights would not take place for another five years. In October of that year, Arsenal had played Rangers under the lights and it had attracted over 60,000 spectators. Two decades later, in the summer of 1951, lights had been installed at the Highbury Stadium in North London. It had been Herbert Chapman, the great manager of Arsenal, who had projected the futuristic vision of matches under floodlights. And before that, it had been experimented with as a by-product of the efforts legendary football manager. Indeed, alteration was wrought not by the cricket administrators, but the innovative thought of the most astute entrepreneur the game has witnessed. Cricket never looked back.įrom the earliest days, cricket had been played under the sun - through its infancy into adulthood, from paddocks to villages to shires and then in stadiums across the Empire. The concept of pyjama cricket, white balls and coloured clothing was born. Well, we do have to add that cricket in the dark had been kicked off rather hesitantly as early as on a summer evening of 1952, but that had not really captured the imagination of the public. And it was taken to its logical conclusion almost exactly a year later at the same ground on November 27, 1979. It started at 2 PM, on a balmy sun-soaked afternoon at the Sydney Cricket Ground, on November 28, 1978. ![]() ![]() Arunabha Sengupta looks at the landmark matches, also tracing the history of the first ever cricket match played under lights - between Middlesex and Arsenal.
